Frequently Asked Questions

1. When do the classes meet?

Most of our classes meet on the weekends, Fridays from 4 PM to 9 PM, and the next day, Saturday, from 9 AM to 2 PM on the OGI campus. These weekend meetings take place approximately every three weeks during the term depending on holidays. We also have some regular evening courses that meet weekly. Online courses are conducted over the internet on a daily basis. The entire degree can be taken online or as a mix of online and on campus meetings! See the current MST course schedule for more specifics.

2. What amount of homework hours outside of class will be expected?

Students should plan on a minimum of 6-8 hours per week of outside homework study for each class.

3. Will I need to order my books as soon as I register?

Yes. Most of our classes have reading assignments, and sometimes writing assignments, due at the first class meeting! Check the syllabus for which textbooks to order. Click here to go to the MST course schedule, which includes links to each syllabus.

4. Do I have to be matriculated into the degree program to take a class?

No! We recommend that students take a couple of courses before matriculating to determine if this schedule works for them in both their professional and private lives. Once the decision is made, the matriculation process can begin while taking classes. Up to 21 credits taken in the department prior to matriculation may be applied toward a MST degree or certificate.

5. What happens if I miss a class meeting?

Since there are only 3 or 4 weekend meetings (6 to 8 class sessions), missing class or arriving late is significant. If you miss an entire weekend, you miss up to 33% of course content! When an unavoidable situation arises, please contact your instructor in advance if possible, to discuss potential consequences. Our teachers are dedicated to working with students and will negotiate the best solution for your circumstances.

6. How long does it take to graduate?

Students taking two courses per quarter, four quarters per year, will graduate in two years. Many students take one course per quarter and graduate in four years.

7. Is this an accredited degree?

The M.S. in Management degree program is fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education.

8. Are advisors available to help me plan?

Faculty advisors are available to meet and discuss your career goals and to assist you in selecting the best courses to accomplish those goals. For an academic advising session, please contact us at 503-748-1219.

9. What kind of financial aid is available?

The financial aid officer in the Office of Graduate Education can advise you on your eligibility for student loans. Check their website for more information, or call (503) 494-7800.

10. How valuable is a management of technology degree? Will a recruiter think it as good as an MBA?

This program was created in response to the request from leaders of regional technology-intensive companies for managers who understand technology issues and how to respond to rapidly changing environments. Testimonials from our alumni confirm the relevance of their MST education.

11. What if I get transferred to another city?

You can finish your degree online! Read more about our online program.
