Health Care Management Long Term Schedule (pdf)
Now entering
its 6th year, the MST Department's certificate in Health Care Management
offers graduate-level education designed for working professionals in
administration, reimbursement, or management roles in health care organizations.
The program
provides an overview of the financial, policy, organizational and operational
environment of health care-related enterprises, giving the student focused
skills for designing and managing health care organizations such as hospitals, clinics, offices,
departments, practices, and companies.
The MST Department blends the unique management and planning expertise
within the M.S. in Management faculty with those of recognized professionals
in the health care community at OHSU and elsewhere.
The program
consists of six courses, including four core (required) courses, and two
elective choices, for a total of at least 20 credits, as listed below.
Health
Care Management Certificate Enrollment Requirements
This program is aimed at working practitioners in health care. Admission
requires at least 2 years professional work experience in the health care
profession. For non-native speakers of English, a score of 625 or better
on the TOEFL examination is required. Click here for an MST certificate

Non-Matriculated
Students
Individual Health Care Management Certificate courses are open to interested
persons without the need to matriculate into the program. Enrollment is
available to any qualified student.
Tuition
The tuition for any of the certificate classes in the 2007-2008 academic
year is $375 per credit-hour (students matriculated in other OHSU departments would pay their home department's regular tuition rate). Partial tuition scholarships may be available
through sponsoring organizations.

Organization, Financing, and History of Health Care Delivery in the
United States

This
course provides a historical context for the current system: The current
economic drivers, political pressures, ethical issues, and the roles
of insurance and pharmaceutical companies. (previously offered as

Managerial
and Financial Accounting for Health Care Professionals

|
This
is a practical course that addresses the financing of health care,
budgeting, and metrics assessing the value-added use of funds. It
also includes an understanding of the health care revenue cycle and
common tools for managing service/product lines. 4 credits

Focusing
on managing and developing a health care program, this course will
have more detailed emphasis on business planning, program design,
scheduling, and resource management (e.g. human resources, capital
equipment, software infrastructure). 4 credits

and Legislation of Health Care Delivery |

The
course reviews how governmental and non-governmental organizations
influence health care delivery. Special emphasis is placed on current
regulatory and legislative initiatives. 4 credits

Business
Planning and Strategy in the Health Care Industry |
(Elective)
|
The
strategic management and planning of health care functional units,
clinics and hospitals in today's fast-changing technology intensive
environments is extremely challenging. It will be shown that the planning
and management of strategy at all levels, not just the senior executives,
is essential to the organization. This class will focus on analyzing,
planning, decision-making, formulation of strategy and implementation
in a world where "growing" today's organization into an
essentially unknowable future is essential for long-term success.
The approach uses a combination of lectures, materials drawn from
a text, and illustrative case studies, combined with first-hand information
provided by invited speakers drawn from strategic decision makers
in the health care industry. 4 credits |

Managing People in Health Care Organizations |

This
course focuses on the management of people in healthcare organizations.
This course is designed to provide the knowledge and tools for healthcare
managers to manage people in all aspects of their work: recruiting,
hiring, motivating, and managing performance, conflict and change.
In addition, aspects of the external environment that affect how people
are managed in the workplace, including employment laws and regulations
and labor unions will be examined. The general objective of this course
is to provide the healthcare manager with current thinking, theory,
and best practices for the management of people in healthcare organizations
in order that s/he can be a better manager of people. 4 credits |

Marketing |
(Elective)

This
course will expose healthcare managers to marketing fundamentals and
how they are/can be applied in healthcare organizations. Course content
covers essential marketing tools and demonstration of their application
in the healthcare environment through case studies and guest speakers.
This course will require students to: obtain a working knowledge of
marketing fundamentals; demonstrate critical thinking skills to construct
logical data-driven arguments in support of their marketing plan;
and learn the nuances of healthcare marketing and the role it plays
in various types of healthcare organizations. After completion students
will be able to: understand marketing's role within healthcare organizations;
create and launch customer-driven products and services; and critically
analyze & improve effectiveness of marketing campaigns. 4 credits |

Operations
and Quality Management for Health Care

This
course will start from the fundamentals of operating systems as they
apply to the health care delivery process. Students will develop an
understanding of the complex interaction between science, medicine,
health care delivery and the practice of management. They will acquire
skills enabling them to take leadership positions at both the project
and group level to design and implement operational changes and improvements
in health care systems and services. 3 credits. |
