OHSU is moving from many different online learning providers to one university-wide system. In Fall 2007, the MST Department will offer three classes on Sakai (the portal is http://sakai.ohsu.edu/). We welcome any and all feedback. Please send comments to Shelly Charles.
The following courses will use Sakai this Fall:
MST512D
MST510 (to supplement the on campus course)
MST511 (to supplement the on campus course)
All other online courses will remain on eCollege, including MST513D, MST521D, MST522D and MST549D.
As an online student, you'll work both individually and
in teams to complete Web-supported cases, simulations, readings, exercises
and project-based deliverables.
Recommended Minimum Hardware Configuration:
Speed: 1.5 GHz/
Memory: 512 MB (1 GB preferred)
Hard Drive: 40 GB (80 GB preferred)

Software
All Students are required to own and use the following software:
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP or Vista
Note: OHSU is a Windows environment. Earlier windows releases are not acceptable (95, 98, and 2000). These are all obsolete. OHSU does NOT support the Apple Macintosh (Mac) platform as some critical software is not available on the Mac platform. If you choose to use a Mac, be sure you have windows emulation software and realize that it is up to you to manage its use.
Productivity Software: Microsoft Office 2003 or newer (standard or professional edition) Includes Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Note: Microsoft Works, Apple Works and Corel WordPerfect are not acceptable.
Browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or 7.0 (free download from Microsoft.com) or Firefox 2.0 (free download from mozilla.com).
Note:The native AOL browser is not acceptable. AOL users must install either Internet Explorer or Firefox to use when accessing online course materials.
Readers/Viewers:
Adobe Acrobat 6 or newer reader (free download from www.adobe.com) This is used to read many documents in the PDF format.
Real Player (free download at http://www.real.com/freeplayer/?rppr=rnwk. ), This is used to view any streamed video linked to course materials.
Flash Player/Shockwave (free download at http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download ) This is used to view several interactive components developed with multimedia format. This player usually comes with your Browser software, so you may already have it installed if you are running the browser software versions mentioned above.
Virus Protection Software: Norton Anti-Virus or McAfee Virus Shield – Some cable or DSL companies provide this as part of your broadband service. Check with your Internet Service Provider before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. Are the online courses self-study, self-paced or correspondence?
A. The courses are given according to OGI MST's schedule
and are instructor-paced, with regular assignments and deadlines, just
like a campus class.
Q. How much time per week should I plan to work on my
online course?
A. Students tell us that they spend anywhere from 3 to 5
hours online per week and another 7 to 10 hours offline. Certain classes
require more group work (more time online) while other classes require
more individual work (more time offline).
Q. What library and information resources are available?
A. Online students are given full on-campus library
privileges consistent with access provided to students taking on-campus
course offerings. Students have access to online
databases where they can access online business journals and periodicals
on the library's website. OGI has a reciprocal library agreement (Portals)
with other universities in Oregon and SW Washington and other agreements
for out of area libraries. |
